Young children thrive when their days have a gentle, recognizable shape. At Bread & Blossom, a North Portland preschool, our mornings move through a gentle rhythm of outdoor play, shared food, stories, practical work, creative projects, and plenty of free play.
We think of it as a rhythm rather than a rigid schedule. The repetition helps children know what comes next, while still leaving plenty of room for weather, wonder and real life.
Our day begins outside.
Families arrive, parents sign in, and children settle into the garden through play or a simple daily outdoor activity. There may be watering, digging, gathering leaves, tending plants, carrying, building or simply time to wander and arrive.
Beginning outdoors gives children space to enter the day gently.
We gather for a simple morning snack outside.
Depending on the day, that might include homemade yogurt, fruit, sourdough crackers, cheese, sausage or another nourishing whole-food snack. We use organic ingredients whenever possible and favor simple, traditionally prepared foods.
Shared meals are an important part of life at Bread & Blossom. Even snack is a small moment of community.
After snack, we take off our shoes, wash our hands, and come indoors.
Boots come off, bodies settle and the morning shifts toward story and indoor work.
These small, repeated transitions help children feel secure because the day becomes familiar.
Our morning circle follows the seasons and usually includes songs, movement, verses and a story.
We often repeat the same songs and stories for several weeks. Young children love repetition, and over time the circle becomes something they know by heart often bringing their favorite parts home to their families.
After circle, children move into free play and practical work.
They may build, draw, look at books, play imaginatively, help prepare lunch or join whatever activity is unfolding in the room.
Free play is central to our program. It is where children practice imagination, language, friendship, problem-solving and independence.
Each morning also includes a simple daily project.
Depending on the day and season, we might paint, work with wool, bake, chop, make tortillas, prepare food or create something for a seasonal celebration.
Children are invited to participate without pressure. Some stay for the whole project. Others join briefly and return to play.
Before lunch, we clean up together.
Toys return to their places, tables are cleared and the room settles.
Caring for our shared space is part of the day.
Lunch is one of the anchors of our morning.
Meals are prepared from scratch and shared together around the table. Lunch might include meatballs, chicken cutlets, soup, dahl, tortillas, vegetables, bread, rice or other simple, nourishing foods. We draw from traditional and ancestral ways of cooking: broths, fermented foods, slow-cooked meals, grains, legumes, meat and vegetables prepared with care.
Children may have helped stir, chop, roll dough or gather something from the garden earlier in the day.
Food is part of the curriculum at Bread & Blossom because it connects care, culture, season and everyday life.
After lunch, we head outside again.
This final stretch of the morning is spacious and unhurried. Children return to the garden, continue a project, dig, build, run, investigate or simply play.
Often the morning’s earlier ideas reappear here in new forms.
Just before one, we gather briefly for our goodbye circle.
It gives the children a clear ending to the morning before we gather belongings and meet families at the garden gate.
At one o’clock, families arrive.
Children head home after four rich hours of outdoor play, stories, practical work, creative projects, shared food and friendship.
And, importantly, they have eaten lunch.
We send them home well fed and ready for a nap, quiet time or a slower afternoon with family.
