Our approach is play-based and nature-based, with inspiration drawn from Waldorf traditions and shaped by the children, families, and place before us. The Catholic values of wonder, reverence, gratitude, and care are woven gently into our days in ways that are practical, heartfelt, and alive. As a mother and daughter working side by side, we are devoted to creating a warm, beautiful space for free play and a steady daily rhythm for a small circle of children ages 2–6. Our days are filled with opportunities to craft, paint, move, tumble, imagine, listen to stories, recite verses, and sing together, all held within a spirit of tenderness, belonging, and love.
Children are invited into relationship with the natural world through tending a flower and medicine garden, gathering herbs for healing and beauty, and helping with the gentle care of small animals. Gratitude for the earth is not taught as an idea, but lived through daily practice. As the year turns, we gather for seasonal celebrations, from autumn harvests and winter light festivals to spring planting and summer solstice, bringing families together to mark the rhythms of the seasons and the cycles of life.
Our materials are simple, beautiful, and chosen with care. Art and craft supplies are handmade from natural ingredients whenever possible, from richly colored paints and earth-toned inks to wool, wood, cotton, and silk. Meals and snacks are organic, made from scratch, and traditionally prepared, with foods such as homemade yogurt, bone broth, sourdough bread, corn tortillas, fermented vegetables, and kefir sodas. Food is part of the life of the school: children help prepare it, share it around the table, and come to know nourishment as something made with care.
Play is the natural work of childhood. Long stretches of imaginative play are supported by simple, open-ended materials that leave room for the child’s own inner pictures. Toys and dolls are intentionally spare in detail, inviting children to invent, transform, and inhabit their play rather than simply consume what has already been imagined for them.
Alongside free play, children take part in the meaningful work of everyday life: cooking and baking, sweeping and washing, gardening, caring for animals, and simple handwork and woodworking. These are not activities created merely to keep little hands busy. They allow children to experience themselves as capable participants in a living household and community.
Rhythm gives shape and security to our days. A dependable flow carries us through outdoor and indoor play, circle and movement, stories and songs, creative work, meals, and rest. Within that steady form, there is plenty of room for spontaneity, weather, wonder, and whatever the children bring to the day.
Stories and fairy tales are shared from the heart, often spoken rather than read, so that children can form their own inner pictures. Stories return through movement, puppet play, dramatization, and imaginative reenactment. Songs, verses, rhymes, and gesture are woven naturally through the day, nourishing language, memory, movement, and imagination.
Bread & Blossom offers a calm and joyful place in which childhood need not be hurried. We meet each child’s unfolding with curiosity, affection, and respect, caring for body, heart, mind, and spirit as parts of one whole life. Our hope is to nurture children who remain imaginative and capable, rooted in belonging, alive to beauty, and full of curiosity about the world.
Hello ~ so nice to meet you. We are Krista & Fiadh Arias, mother and daughter collaborating to create a unique and special experience not only for your child, but also for you and your family. We believe that children need rhythm in order to settle into peace. We believe they need the natural world to guide their growing limbs into harmony. We believe children learn generative conflict skills while playing with each other. We believe they learn from beauty and that curative structure allows for responsible freedom and deep creativity. Together we have created a container for your child to blossom!
